5 Ways to Best Pitch Yourself During an Interview

Jan 8, 2025

Interviewing is challenging for any candidate. Knowing important details about the company and the  role you’re interviewing for and how to clearly communicate you have the required skillset for the job is a lot to convey during an interview. Here are some tips to help candidates shake any nerves and land the job!

  1. Know your audience:
    1. Research the company and the job! Understand not only what the job description requirements are for the role, but what the company does. Look at the company website before your interview, get familiar with their mission and value statements.
  2. Strong introduction:
    1. First impressions matter. When a potential employer asks you about yourself in an interview, speak to your professional background more than yourself personally. Yes, they want to hear about you, your family, your life, but they mainly want to hear about what you have done professionally that has brought you in front of them.
  3. Use the CAR Method:
    1. Context- Briefly describe the situation
    2. Actions- Detail the specific actions taken to address the situation
    3. Result- Share the outcome of your actions and how they were impactful
    4. The CAR method of answering questions can be directly associated with situational questions, like “tell me about a time when…” so make sure to give the context of your example, detail the actions you took to complete the task, and share the result. The CAR method is designed to help give a well-rounded answer in an interview.
  4. Be Yourself:
    1. Be your genuine self and showcase your knowledge and passion for the job you’re interviewing for. Provide insight into how your skills have developed and shaped your career path to lead you to the interview at hand.
  5. Be Engaging:
    1. Ask questions! Actively listening and engaging is the best way to show you are interested in the role. It’s best to come prepared with at least 2-3 questions to ask an interviewer. The questions can be about the role specifically, the company, or the company culture.

Interviews can be intimidating, but effectively demonstrating and speaking to your skillset can help you land the job! Remember to do your research on the role and company, be yourself and talk about your work experience, give well-rounded answers using the CAR method, and be engaging!
